Legendary ATV Society is pleased to announce the exclusive listing for this incredibly unusual and obscure model, that Honda quietly released under the radar in the early 90’s - the TRX200XN. For us the mystery and story for this odd platform began to unfold after going through part of our trade magazine archive, that we had been collecting since around the Mid 80’s dropping off sometime in 1993. In that mix of magazines was the January 1991 issue of Dirt Wheels. In this particular issue ( double page spread shown below ) an article with a photo montage was written with the title “1992 Hondas?” The article went on to explain that the images featured were of prototype machines that were on display at a National Dealer meeting at Honda’s Marysville, OH plant. Based on the lead time of print production for trade publications like Dirt Wheels, we can speculate that this meeting occurred sometime in the 4th quarter of 1990.  The magazine was not invited, but somehow some photos were smuggled out, along with some really important intel it seems.

Front and center in the coverage of what seemed like a high steaks James Bond spy mission debrief, was a Teal and White sport platform with Hot Pink accents for the shocks and hubs, and an integrated hood / cowl that covered the handlebar clamps and the area where you’d normally find the fuel tank fill on a Honda atv. Pretty striking details to say the least. The rounded spacey looking fenders followed suite with the design standard Honda had established on their 1987 TRX250X and TRX125, and lent itself to a familiar, but very modern aesthetic. Some familiar details were present on what appeared to be an entirely new model - like the Ohtsu Pro Vector 107s on the Rear that came on the 1986 ATC200X and the Ohtsu PV102s that came on the 1987-1988 TRX205X. So what was it!? Dirt Wheels explained that this was an early rendition of the TRX200X which was thought to be being scheduled for a 1992 release, with the goal of taking aim at the market-share Yamaha was able to capitalize on with it's low cost youth sport platform - the YFS200 Blaster.
So it’s a bit of mystery of what transpired next behind the scenes at Factory Honda. What we do know is that it was still a strange time in the market, especially for Honda which completely abandon all sport and performance models for the 1990 model year, representing a mere 3 platforms that season - 2 of which were the same model, one with 4x4 the other without, and a strange looking small utility platform with an oversize trunk. Clearly this long fall from dominance - having represented over Thirteen Atc/Atv models in the 1986 model year, seemed to have left the company with a surplus of overstock of parts, which is where the story line picks up again… Enter the official TRX200XN. While there is no real official story as to why the Prototype model on display in 1990, turned into an officially converted ATC200X / TRX250X hybrid, and released only in Mexico / South America in or around late 1991 -  what we can guess is that it’s possible a dealer / distributor South of the boarder placed a sizable order for the Prototype model, but Honda decided to repurpose parts instead of going all in on new manufacturing. So the sleek modern Prototype became a somewhat unrefined looking Frankenstein unit, that we ourselves first thought was an aftermarket conversion kit when first stumbling upon a low quality image online around 2021, clearly not believing that Honda was associated with what looked like a home spun project... But here we are, an official Honda documented / numbers matching machine purchased from the original owner.
Currently owned by one of our members who truly loves going down the same kind of worm holes in history that we also find ourselves in - after sharing several hours of phone calls, we feel we can finally accurately place and describe this unique piece of Honda History. So lets start with what is 100% unique to this machine - which would be the dash / key pad, the front fenders, the front fender stay, the hood decals, the swing arm decal and the frame from the bottom middle ( near where the foot rests are ) to the front of the machine. This section of frame was added at the point we describe above to the rear and top half of the ATC200X frame. The section of frame was specifically engineered for this machine - as you will see in the detail photos here. Next, what is shared with the ATC200X? Basically, the tank down and back excluding the heel guards which we’ll address next. What’s shared with the TRX250X? The front bumper, the A-Arms, front shocks along with the wheels, brakes and heel guards. That leaves the headlight and handle bars - the light we think can be placed from the TRX200SX ( although it was red, and this unit is black ) The bars we feel track with the ATC200X, but did not get into measurements. So there you have it, this Honda Hybrid fully explained!

Tracking to be one of the best mostly original examples to ever surface for this underground oddball - the overall machine is in Good+ / VG used condition showing standard age / patina, light bumps and bruises, signs of standard use / but not abused - referencing key contact points on the frame for rider engagement.  With general maintenance having been performed, this machine runs / shifts / brakes and operates as should. Idles perfectly when warmed up, no smoke, clean tank - lights and electrical all functional. Being sold on mainly rarity and documentation, this machine is in fact ready to ride. For those who may be looking to add this to a collection and are focused on 100% originality - there are some minor corrections that could be performed, but all within the scope of mass produced Honda parts that aren’t obscure or super difficult to come by. So for the Honda aficionados that have or had absolutely everything, but not one of these rare birds - save yourself a trip to Mexico, we hear the weather is nice in Texas this time of year!
